Robyn ram-raids Hoxton

Robyn @ Cargo, London, 29th March 2007

For the second time in a month, Robyn played a blistering gig in old London Town. The venue, Cargo in Hoxton, was twice as big as Metro; visible progress at least, in the onward march of her world domination. The place was jam-packed with fans, so there was a lot of love in the room and a huge boom of appreciation after each song.

Acknowledging the "big love", Robyn also told everyone how she never envisaged the success of her "Own record" put out on her "Own label" on her "Own terms. Bless!

She bounced around the stage for the whole gig, bashing a syn drum within an inch its life for Who's That Girl. Her voice is so spot on, live, but her memory went west during You Can't Handle Me. She forgot the words but was rescued by her guitarist.

The setlist was exactly the same as the Metro gig - just a different order - but there was still a noticeable absence of Crash and Burn Girl. The highlight tonight was the acoustic version of Be Mine - played as a THIRD encore. Again, she was on stage with just two musicians so her band introduction took only ten seconds (Joss Stone take note). Apparently there'll be loads of press coming up for the UK release of her two year old album. And more gigs! Yay!

I was actually giving serious thought to going to one of these gigs, but only really know a handful of her songs (roll on Monday's album release). It was great, I take it, from your review, but did she do 'With every heartbeat'? She must have done, surely. How was it?

She DID do 'With Every Heartbeat' and the handful that you know, she probably did. She's brilliant live... She even did a fab updated 'Show Me Love' and I swear the girl next to me wet herself. I moved away.

Hey Phil! Great review... I'm really astonished at the massive following Robyn's had this past year in the blogosphere. This must be what it was like for the Arctic Monkeys, which I completely missed out on and never got in the first place.

Mhm: sounds like she needs to go on the list too for next time. Doubt those will be the last gigs she does in Londra this year.

I see from one of your older posts that we will both (along with every other electro-obsessive gay in existence) be going to the PSB gig at the end of May...

Yes, Tricky! PSB, May 27th, can't wait! I'll be the doing a dancing baby routine - as is my wont... Look out for a cat's tail arm waving around the middle of the stalls
And Monsieur D'Luv, I think all this has taken Robyn by surprise too. It's just crap that no other medium has picked up on her. Tsk.

Agreed... "Konichiwa Bitches" is nowhere to be found on the UK download chart, sadly. I just downloaded the EP myself (finally) from iTunes over here.
